IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to college or to try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

• say why he/she would not enjoy going to college
• explain why getting a job is a good idea for him/her
• suggest types of job that would be suitable for him/her

Dear Sarah,

I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your letter. I understand that you are trying to decide whether to go to college or start working. If you ask for my opinion, I think getting a job would be a better choice for you.

From what I know about you, I don't think you would enjoy college very much. You have always preferred practical activities to studying long hours. College requires a lot of reading, writing assignments, and exams, which might make you feel bored and frustrated. I remember how much you disliked spending all day in classrooms during high school.

I believe getting a job would suit you much better. You are a friendly, hardworking, and responsible person, so you would learn quickly in a real working environment. Besides earning your own money, you would gain valuable experience and become more independent. Later, if you decide you need further qualifications, you can always study part-time while working.

As for suitable jobs, I think you could do very well in customer service, retail sales, or hotel reception because you communicate well with people. You might also enjoy working as an office assistant or an apprentice in a skilled trade, where you can develop useful skills for the future.
