Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rosie,

I hope this letter find you in a good health. I am writing this letter to you in the response of your letter that I received last week. I know you are confused that you should be studying advance programme from the college or you should be looking for the job related to your education.

I will suggest you to start looking for a full time job instead of pursuing more advance studies. The reason is I am suggesting this to you is, that I know that from very beginning you don't enjoy going to school, college, and university. I know the reason behind this was, you always wanted to have more practical knowledge rather than theoretical. Also, most of our friends including me have moved out of the town because of the job, so you will be left alone in the college.

Getting a job is suitable idea for you at this point, as there will be many benefits. Such as you will be financially independent, you will start gaining the work experiences from a young age, and you will be able to apply all the knowledge that you have learned so far in this work.

I will suggest you to start looking for a full-time job in the field of Supply chain. As we all know this field is vey vast and has a lot options. This will be match your background of study, as well as I know you are always interested about how the placement of good and services take place. So by working in this field you will have a lot of fun, and you will get to learn more.

I am looking forward for your response, and wishing you all the very best for the next part of your life.

Kind regards,

Nizamuddin Memon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why your friend would not enjoy college, provided logical reasons for choosing a job, and suggested a specific field. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, while you mention 'practical knowledge,' you could briefly contrast this with the specific academic pressures of college to add more depth. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The reason is,' 'Also,' and 'Such as.' However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'I will suggest you to.' To improve, try varying your sentence starters and using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' 'On the other hand') to improve the flow between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'financially independent' and 'theoretical.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in the response of your letter' (should be 'in response to') and 'placement of good and services' (should be 'goods and services'). You also use 'advance' as an adjective where 'advanced' is required. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that you need to focus more on precise collocations and word forms to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the job,' 'the college'), prepositions ('in the response of'), and verb forms ('I hope this letter find you'). Additionally, the sentence 'I know you are confused that you should be studying...' is slightly awkward; 'I know you are unsure whether you should study...' would be more natural. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these errors occur throughout the text.
