Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hi Jaideep,

I hope you are doing well!

I am writing to inform you that, I received your letter regarding advice and I believe that you should go for Job. As you know we did our bachelors together, now you will join the college you will not be able enjoy in college alone. Moreover, Nowadays according to job market it is quite easy to find a good job. Yesterday, i was reading a newspaper and there were multiple job advertisements on newspapers. According to me, as per your previous degree you should try to get a job in business sector where you can explore opportunities regarding junior Accountant or Financial Analyst. As a good friend I know that you are extremely good mathematics which can help you to get a higher level position. You can also enhance your skills further and improve your analytical skills.

You can respond to this letter and let me know what you decides.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained why college might not be enjoyable, provided a rationale for choosing a job, and suggested specific roles. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding why he would not enjoy college is brief and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or personal reasoning. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is clear throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the opening to the advice and then to the closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As a good friend', which help link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in one block, which makes it harder to read. Using clear paragraph breaks for each distinct point would significantly improve the structure and flow of your writing. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'analytical skills', 'financial analyst', and 'job market'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'go for Job' (should be 'go for a job') and 'extremely good mathematics' (should be 'extremely good at mathematics'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied descriptive language would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'now you will join the college you will not be able enjoy' (missing 'if' and 'to'), and 'what you decides' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing.
