Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be enjoyable, explain the benefits of working, and suggest suitable roles in the hospitality sector. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why college would not be enjoyable is brief and could be expanded with more personal insight. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed reasoning or examples to provide a more comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the initial advice to specific reasons and suggestions. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While these are effective, the paragraphing is somewhat compressed; the entire body of the letter is essentially one block. Using distinct paragraphs for each bullet point would improve the visual structure and flow. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear paragraph breaks will help the reader follow your argument more effortlessly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'independent', 'hospitality course', and 'career goals'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'cooking freak person' (which is unnatural) and 'full part' (which is unclear). Spelling is generally accurate, but the phrasing occasionally lacks the natural flow of a native speaker. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to employment and professional development, and try to avoid translating idioms directly from your native language, as this can lead to awkward phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'prefer job over the college' (missing articles), 'won't be able enjoy' (missing 'to'), and 'it will be useful for you get' (missing 'to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that infinitives are correctly formed after modal verbs. Reviewing basic sentence construction will help you produce more error-free sentences.
