Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to give you some advice about whether you should go to college or get a job. In my opinion, I would strongly recommend that you get a job instead of returning to college at this stage.
First of all, you have been away from formal education for around eight years, so it may be difficult for you to adjust to studying again. You may find it challenging to concentrate on your studies and complete assignments and exams. Moreover, teaching methods have changed considerably compared with the past, which could make it even more difficult for you to adjust. As a result, you may find college stressful rather than enjoyable.
I also think getting a job would be a better option because you have already completed a computer application course and have good knowledge of using computers. Therefore, you could find employment relatively easily and start earning a regular income. As you told me that your family is facing financial difficulties because of your father's illness, your income could also help you support your parents and become financially independent.
As for suitable jobs, I would suggest applying for an accounting position or a computer-related office job. These roles would allow you to use your existing skills while gaining valuable work experience. Some companies also offer good salaries and benefits.
I hope you will consider my advice.
Yours lovingly,
Sukh Gill

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all parts of the task. You clearly stated why college might be difficult for your friend, provided a logical explanation for why employment is a better choice given his specific circumstances, and offered relevant job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the connection between his financial situation and the need for immediate employment, which adds a personal touch that makes the response convincing and relevant to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of giving advice. Phrases like 'formal education', 'adjust to studying', 'financial difficulties', and 'financially independent' are used accurately. The language is natural and fits the semi-formal tone of a letter to a friend. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it could be elevated slightly further with more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band, but it is certainly strong and error-free in terms of word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, and you have used a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, the use of conditional and causal clauses (e.g., 'As you told me that your family is facing financial difficulties...') shows good control. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the flow is natural, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
