Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amit,

I hope you are in splendid health. I received your letter yesterday, and I was really happy that you reached out to me to make your choices clear. As i know that you recently completed your B.Tech from an eminent college in Jalandhar.

Although you already have experience from college regular study but i prefer that you apply for a job in your field that gives you enough experience in production, which is your goal for the future. You can continue your studies through distance learning.

In this modern era, staying away from home is really hard, and for living a best life, we all need money. You should definitely apply for a job because you can manage your expenses and help your family too. I remember that when you completed your placements, they offered you a full-time position in their company. If you accept that offer, you are gonna be so proud of yourself because you are already efficient at that work.

After completing B.Tech in Engineering, one of my friends is working as a production engineer, line manager, and material handler, and you can choose one of these fields for your job.

My good wishes are with you.

Your friend

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be the best path, explain the benefits of working, and provide specific job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the first bullet point—explaining why he would not enjoy college—is slightly underdeveloped. You mention that he already has experience from college, but you could have elaborated more on the potential burnout or the lack of practical application compared to a job. Despite this, the position is clear and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'In this modern era', and 'If you accept that offer'. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the opening sentence of the second paragraph. Improving the flow between ideas by using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of advice.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'eminent college', 'distance learning', and 'full-time position'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'living a best life' (should be 'living the best life' or 'living a better life') and 'regular study' (which sounds slightly unnatural). You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary related to engineering, which is good. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'As i know that you recently completed' (the 'As' makes this a fragment) and 'you are gonna be' (too informal for a written task, even a letter). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'one of my friends is working... and you can choose one of these fields'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and avoiding informal contractions would be beneficial.
