IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to college or to try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I am writing this letter to you to talk u about the plans of going to a job rather than going to a college in this current scenario.

Considering your current financial stabilities, since your father recently got admitted in the hospital due to cardiac arrest and you had to pay a huge sum of amount to the hospital, you could avoid pursuing higher studies at the college for now.

Instead you could work a decent job with a decent pay that can help u on the financial side.

With this you could be able to pay the medical loan for your father’s expenses as well as you can manage your family too.

I would suggest you can take up a job like working as a graphic designer for YouTube channels which offer a good pay. It’s currently a high income job because YouTubers are soaring high right now and you would be able to make a good and decent amount from it. Also you wouldn’t need to relocate or need any investment. You can sit at home and have a good laptop for this job.

I would suggest you consider my opinion on this and move forward

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why college might not be suitable given the friend's financial situation, provide a logical argument for working, and suggest a specific job (graphic designer). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, although the closing 'Yours faithfully' is technically incorrect for a friend (it should be 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes'). The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear rationale for your advice. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations align with the informal nature of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem (financial issues) to the solution (getting a job) and finally to the specific recommendation. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Instead', 'With this', and 'Also' to link your sentences. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between the financial situation and the job suggestion is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'financial stabilities', 'cardiac arrest', and 'pursuing higher studies'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'talk u about' (informal/slang), 'plans of going to a job' (unnatural phrasing), and 'huge sum of amount' (redundant). While these do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding informal abbreviations like 'u' in your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' or 'since' clauses. There are several grammatical errors, including 'father recently got admitted in the hospital' (should be 'to'), 'pay a huge sum of amount' (redundant), and 'you could be able to' (unnecessary modal stacking). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor prepositional errors would improve your score.
