Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arya,

I hope you are doing well! It was wonderful to spend time with all of you in Toronto last week. You always been so dear to me and always will be.

Anyway, I came to know about you from your mom that you are planning to take admission for master's degree. I would like strongly suggest to you don’t go for it.You have already completed your bachelors in Computer Programming. Believe me you will feel so uncomfortable again in class room with other younger classmates and you are planning to do part time job alongside which will make you more tired and sleepy during the lectures.

As per I know you had already one student load on your head. For that reason apply for entry-levels jobs as a game developer because you love that and you made great project in final exam. You can put that project too in your resume and I will give you few references and prepare you for interview questions.

Best of luck for your job hunting. Hope you understand that you need money right now and make wise decision.

Your sincerely

Hmm.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain why college might be unsuitable, provide a rationale for choosing work, and suggest a specific career path. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, while you mention the student loan, you could elaborate more on how immediate employment would alleviate that specific financial pressure. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the initial greeting to the advice and the closing. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For that reason' and 'Anyway,' to link your thoughts. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'As per I know,' which affects the natural progression. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'references,' 'resume,' and 'entry-level.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take admission for master's degree' (should be 'apply for a master's degree') and 'student load' (should be 'student loan'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your expression. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise terminology for academic and professional contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'You always been so dear' (missing auxiliary 'have'), 'I would like strongly suggest to you don’t go for it' (incorrect word order and structure), and 'As per I know' (incorrect prepositional phrase). While the meaning remains clear, these errors are persistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb tense usage, and the structure of indirect speech or advice-giving clauses.
