Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Inder,

I hope you are in a radiant health and high spirits. Last week, I received your letter, and I believe you should pursue for job rather than going to college.

Since college education requires long study hours, I believe you would be exhausted easily since you avoid attending lectures and rote learning. Besides this, as per your interest in computer programming and machine learning, the college does not have course regarding your specific interest.

In my opinion, getting a job related to your interest will not only provide more job opportunities but also enhance your experience in the field. In addition, you can earn some money for your future endevours.

There are many job opportunities in the market as per your interest such as Data Analyst, Programmer, Software designer and many more. You can apply for jobs on LinkedIn as per your requirements.

I will be more than happy to help, incase you need any other guidance.

With love,

Jasnoor.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be suitable for your friend, explain the benefits of working, and provide specific examples of job roles. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' regarding the job benefits; for instance, explaining how practical experience in programming is often more valued than theoretical college knowledge would add depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Besides this', 'In my opinion', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural; for example, the transition between the college discussion and the job benefits could be smoother by using a more sophisticated linking phrase.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'radiant health', 'rote learning', and 'endeavours'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'pursue for job' (should be 'pursue a job') and 'radiant health' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). You also have a spelling error with 'endevours' (endeavours). Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Since college education requires long study hours, I believe you would be exhausted...'. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the college does not have course' (missing an article: 'a course') and 'pursue for job' (incorrect preposition). Most of your sentences are error-free, but the occasional slips prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional phrases will help improve your accuracy.
