Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Yash,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter in response to your letter that I received earlier this week. I understand that you are a bit confused between pursuing further education and getting an employment for yourself. I would recommend that you should find a job rather than going to college at this point.

I know you since we were 3 years old and I personally think you wouldn't enjoy the culture of the college and since the childhood you are really good at understanding the practical side of the concept and not the theoretical side, I would not advise you to enrol yourself in any course.

Now, we are living in an era where our formal education doesn't define our path in our career and hence I personally think that for someone like you getting a job rather than wasting time in school would be a wise decision.

Since you were always fascinated by automobiles from childhood, I think joining an automobile assembly plant as a technician or working as a parts advisor in a local garage would be suitable options for you for the employment.

with that being said, if you need any further advise on this topic, feel free to send me another mail and I would be happy to discuss further.

Regards,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be suitable for your friend, explain the benefits of entering the workforce, and provide specific, relevant job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout the response. To reach a higher band, you could further develop your ideas by elaborating on the specific 'practical' skills your friend possesses or explaining the long-term career benefits of starting in the automotive industry earlier. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'hence', 'since', and 'with that being said' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal-informal letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'pursuing further education', 'automobile assembly plant', and 'parts advisor' are well-chosen and relevant to the context. There are some minor errors, such as 'getting an employment' (should be 'getting a job' or 'employment') and 'advise' (should be the noun 'advice'). While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would help elevate your score to the next level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I know you since we were 3 years old' (should be 'I have known you since...'), and minor punctuation issues. You have a good grasp of sentence construction, but increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent tense usage would improve your accuracy and range.
