IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

- suggest types of job that would be suitable for him/her
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 9.0)
Dear Yash,
It was great to hear from you. You have got a fundamental decision to make, but if you want my honest advice, I strongly reckon you should skip college and jump straight into a job.
To be straight with you, I do not think you would enjoy college. You’ve always thrived on action, and sitting in lecture halls absorbing dry, theoretical concepts would drive you crazy. The endless grind of essays, academic exams, and deadlines would just feel incredibly suffocating and boring for you.
On the flip side, getting a job is a fantastic move. Earning your own paycheck offers immediate financial freedom instead of burying you under student debt. More importantly, you will gain genuine, practical experience and real-world skills that a textbook simply cannot replicate.
Given your energetic personality and knack for persuading people, you’d absolutely crush it in a fast-paced sales role or a digital marketing apprenticeship. These jobs keep you active and offer clear pathways to move up the career ladder quickly.
Let's grab a coffee this weekend to chat through this properly.
Take care,
Vedang

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 9.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why college would not suit your friend, why a job is a better alternative, and provide specific, relevant examples of suitable roles. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly yet persuasive stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and supported with logical reasoning, such as the mention of avoiding student debt and gaining practical experience. The position is clear from the opening paragraph and is maintained consistently until the end. You have successfully fulfilled all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 9.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the structure easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To be straight with you', 'On the flip side', and 'More importantly', which help to connect your thoughts smoothly. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. There is a natural flow between the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the closing, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 9.0
You demonstrate a wide and natural range of vocabulary that is highly appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'thrived on action', 'dry, theoretical concepts', 'suffocating', and 'knack for persuading people' show a sophisticated command of English. The word choices are precise and contribute to the persuasive tone of the letter. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is both fluent and flexible. You successfully use idiomatic expressions like 'crush it' and 'jump straight into', which fit the informal register of a letter to a friend perfectly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0
Your grammatical control is excellent. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if you want my honest advice, I strongly reckon...') and relative clauses, with high accuracy. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to enhance clarity. There is a good mix of simple and complex structures that keeps the writing engaging. The tense usage is consistent throughout the letter, and there are no grammatical slips that impede communication. The overall quality of the grammar is very high, reflecting a strong command of the language.
