Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jaivik,
I hope this letter finds you well. It's been a long time since we talked.
I received your letter regarding a decision whether to attend the college or get the job. I personally think that you should try to get a job. You would not enjoy college because here in Canada, the college is only about theories. And, I know how much you like to code. Therefore, I believe getting a job would be a better idea. Since the job market is booming nowadays, I am pretty sure that you will get into any IT company.
You should go with a Gen AI developer job because this job is not only in demand but also high paying. Moreover, you are already advanced in Python. That's why it will be easy for you to work.
If you are still confused, feel free to call me. We can meet later. Do convey my regards to your family.
Yours truly,
Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be enjoyable, explain the benefits of working, and suggest a specific job role. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' regarding the job market or the specific nature of the college experience to provide more depth to your arguments, as some points are currently quite brief.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'That's why' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between the college discussion and the job suggestion feels more fluid, as the current structure is slightly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'booming', 'in demand', and 'advanced'. The language is natural and fits the context of a friendly letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'attend the college' (should be 'attend college') and 'get the job' (should be 'get a job'). To achieve a higher score, incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that would be natural in an informal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the unnecessary use of the definite article 'the' before 'college' and 'job' in the second paragraph. Punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
