Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Eva,

I am writing with regard to the advice about whether to join the college or to get a job. I understand you want to enjoy the college life more, but very few people get a chance to do a job while studying. Fortunately, you are one of those people who is getting her job just after the graduation in a Multi National Company. College life seems attractive, but you would not enjoy it. After some days it will become normalise you will not have anything to explore

about college life.

Joining the job would be more beneficial for you, as it not only make you financial independent but also give you the chance to make your decisions.

I would like to suggest some other good options such as Data Analyst, Software Developer and Information officer instead of joining a multi national company as a code developer. I am hoping that you will choose wisely.

Best wishes

Ana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You successfully explain why college might not be enjoyable, advocate for the benefits of employment, and suggest specific job roles. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why college life would become 'normalise' is vague and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more fully extended with clearer reasoning. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'as it not only... but also', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. The sentence 'After some days it will become normalise you will not have anything to explore about college life' is poorly punctuated and lacks a clear connection to the previous thought, which disrupts the progression of ideas. Improving the use of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Multi National Company' and 'financial independent'. However, there are some errors in word choice and collocation that slightly impede the natural flow. For example, 'join the college' is less natural than 'go to college' or 'attend university', and 'make you financial independent' should be 'make you financially independent'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores. Expanding your repertoire of collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'it not only make you financial independent' (subject-verb agreement and adjective/adverb confusion) and 'getting her job' (incorrect article usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the second paragraph where a run-on sentence occurs. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
