Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mary,

I am doing good, I hope you are doing great! I was very happy to receive a letter from you. I noticed you are confused whether to pursue higher studies or to join work.

I personally suggest you to go ahead and join any reputed organization. As you are already qualified with a bachelor degree from a prestigious university that will add value to your resume. Apparently, I strongly feel you won’t be enjoying studying Masters immediately right now, it will create unnecessary stress to you.

Furthermore, I recommend you to start applying roles like content creation, digital marketing or branding these roles will be enhance your ability and helps you to develop your capabilities as I know you are interested in these fields. Moreover, starting a career now will build up your confidence and you will be more independent.

Trust me and join immediately any company which offers you the above roles with a good package, you won’t regret the decision later.

I look forward to hear from you soon with a happy news.

Warm Regards,

Usha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why college might be stressful, why working is beneficial, and provided specific job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on why the specific roles mentioned (content creation/digital marketing) are a better fit for her personality or current skills. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'As' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more distinct to separate the different points of advice. The flow of ideas is generally smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme to enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed organization', 'prestigious university', and 'capabilities'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'join work' (should be 'enter the workforce') and 'applying roles' (should be 'applying for roles'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered sophisticated. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise verbs to express your intentions, which will help you achieve a more natural and fluent tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am doing good' (should be 'I am doing well'), 'I suggest you to go ahead' (should be 'I suggest that you go ahead'), and 'these roles will be enhance' (should be 'will enhance'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitive versus gerund structures after specific verbs. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will also help improve your score.
