Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Kamal,

I hope you are doing well. I recently received your letter about whether to go to college or take an office job. In my opinion, it is the best time to start working and gain real-life experience.

I graduated in 2014, and then I joined MNC for practical experience, which was a valuable asset in my MBA later on. According to me, you would not like going to college at this time, as you will not know work life, and an MBA is all about that.

Getting a job at this time is practically more appropriate for you because you will gain some experience as well as earn some money, which can later on be used for your fees. Also, you told me earlier that you wanted to be a helping hand to your father; therefore, this is the best plan for you to go for.

I heard there will be placements from big businesses in your final semester; please enroll in one in the next one to two months, as you are approaching your final month soon. Other than that, apply online for internships; most probably, you will get a full-time one in hand from there, as you are a bright student.

Please let me know if you need help with anything else. I look forward to your reply and decision.

Yours lovingly,

Roop

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be the best choice, explain the benefits of working, and suggest suitable types of employment. Your position is consistent throughout the letter, and the tone is appropriate for a friend. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of 'types of jobs' rather than just suggesting internships or general placements, as this would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more nuanced understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct point, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In my opinion,' 'Also,' and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between your personal experience and the advice for your friend is smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and supports the progression of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'valuable asset' and 'practically more appropriate' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'According to me' (which should be 'In my view' or 'I believe') and 'get a full-time one in hand'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to career and education would enhance the quality of your writing and help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I joined MNC' (which requires an article: 'an MNC') and 'as you will not know work life' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest bands. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent use of articles and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
