Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Joban,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health. I am writing in response to your letter regarding whether you should go to college. My honest advise will be that you should try to get a job. Since, you came to Canada after pursuing the Masters in Agriculture, you are way ahead of the mindsets that student possess here. Colleges here are a total different experience than India and you might encounter language barrier as well. Moreover, it will be better to get a suitable job and build your work experience so that you can lodge your file for Permanent Residency. On top of that, it will help in covering your financial expenses in a new country. You already have job experience in India. I think finding job relating to your field will be a good idea like Field Supervisor, idea of like Agronomist, Farm Sup Farm Lead.

I hope you the best of luck for your job hunt.

Yours Faithfully,

Amitoz Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state why college might not be suitable, explain the benefits of working, and suggest specific job roles. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the 'language barrier' and 'mindsets', these points could be expanded with a bit more detail to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band. The advice is consistent and the position is clear throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the advice to the reasons and finally to the suggestions. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'On top of that', and 'Since', which help the flow. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in one block, which makes it harder to read. To improve, you should separate the different points into distinct paragraphs to enhance the structure and readability of your response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Permanent Residency', 'financial expenses', and 'agronomist'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'advise' (which should be the noun 'advice') and 'total different' (which should be 'totally different'). Additionally, the phrasing 'lodge your file' is a bit informal/colloquial. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Since, you came' (unnecessary comma), 'student possess' (should be plural 'students possess'), and 'finding job' (missing article 'a'). The closing 'Yours Faithfully' is also technically incorrect for a letter to a friend; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more appropriate. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
