Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manav,

I hope you are doing well. I received your letter asking whether you shoulg try to get a job or go to college. First of all, thank you for writing me a letter and i would be happy to assist you to make a decision on this matter.

We know each other since a long time and knowing you, i would advise ypu against for going to college as you are more of a pratical person and college lectures can bore you and years of studying will only give you most of the theroretical knowledge. It can be a bit frustrative and annoying going to lectures that you are not going to like.

I would suggest you to get a job as it would help you gain some field knowledge and experience. Also, you will not get anxious about grades and money flow will start, helping you to take care of your own bills.

I know you have good communication skills and you are amazing with people whom you don't even know, keeping this in mind, my suggestion for you will to start a career in sale or marketing. And if you decide you want to pursue further education to enhance your profile in the sector you can start studying part time with your job.

I hope my advise will help you and hope to receive a letter with your success soon.

Your truly,

Hitanshu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task instructions. You clearly explain why Manav would not enjoy college by pointing out that he is a practical person who might find lectures boring and theoretical. You also provide strong reasons why getting a job is beneficial, such as gaining field experience and earning money to pay bills. Finally, you suggest suitable types of work by recommending sales or marketing given his communication skills. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and all parts of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant and extended ideas, fully satisfying the requirements of this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the discussion about college, the benefits of a job, and specific job suggestions. Cohesive devices are generally used well, with phrases like 'First of all,' 'Also,' and 'keeping this in mind' helping to guide the reader through your thoughts. However, referencing and transitions could be slightly smoother in places, such as the sudden shift into job suggestions. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, using phrases like 'communication skills,' 'further education,' and 'enhance your profile.' There are some good attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'theoretical knowledge' and 'practical person.' However, there are a few noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'shoulg' instead of 'should,' 'ypu' instead of 'you,' 'pratical' instead of 'practical,' 'frustrative' instead of 'frustrating,' and 'sale' instead of 'sales.' These occasional errors slightly detract from precision, but they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses like 'And if you decide you want to pursue further education...' and relative clauses like 'whom you don't even know.' There are several grammatical errors and typos present in the text, such as lowercase 'i,' missing articles or prepositions like 'against for going,' and incorrect word forms like 'my advise will help you' (where 'advice' is needed as a noun). Despite these errors, your meaning remains clear, and you demonstrate a reasonable level of control over basic sentence patterns.
