Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Aman,
How have you been? I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits.
i received your letter where u asked about my advice whether you should go to college or to get a job. i think you should get a job. in my opinion, in this fast paced life continuing study is waste of time as there are less opportunities for getting a white collar job. and u have to do lot of work like assignment, presentation and exams which will be stressful.
you should apply for a job because you can earn more and more money. in today's world money is everything like a fish can't live without water we can't survive without money. you can live luxurious lifestyle and make ur dreams true.
you have good communication skills i think u should apply for jobs like receptionist as u are very calm and soft soopoken person. u can handle customer in a positive mood.
hope to see you soon.
your lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. The writer successfully explains why the friend might not enjoy college by mentioning stress from assignments and presentations, suggests that getting a job is a good idea to earn money and live a luxurious lifestyle, and recommends a specific job as a receptionist due to the friend's calm personality and communication skills. Although some ideas such as the comparison between money and water are somewhat informal and exaggerated, the overall purpose and tone are appropriate for a friendly letter. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical arrangement with an appropriate opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, such as reasons against college, reasons for getting a job, and specific job suggestions. However, cohesion is somewhat mechanical and limited, with minimal use of cohesive devices or transition words between sentences. Furthermore, referencing and capitalization are faulty in places, such as the lowercase 'i' used repeatedly ('i received your letter', 'i think'). Overall, the organisation is coherent enough to follow easily, but cohesive links require more flexibility.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'communication skills', 'receptionist', and 'luxurious lifestyle'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'soft soopoken' instead of 'soft-spoken', and informal abbreviations like 'u'. Phrasing like 'earn more and more money' is also repetitive and basic. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message and attempts less common items like 'radiant health', lexical inaccuracies prevent the writer from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'continuing study is waste of time as there are less opportunities...' and '...exams which will be stressful.' There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('is waste of time', 'handle customer'), lack of capitalization for the pronoun 'I', and spelling slips. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. The control of grammar aligns well with the descriptors for Band 5.5.
