Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mohan,

I hope you are doing well. From previous letter, I got to know that you are confronted with a choice in a life that whether to opt for a job or to start a master's study. As you looking for my advice, I will rather suggest you to search out a field job. You have already spent three years in college which implies you already got enough of theortical knowledge. Consequently, this a right time to step into practical field and implement your knowledge in real world.

At same time, I am familiar with importance of college life in terms of enjoying every bit of day with friends as well as learning with them. In those three years of graduation, you have not enjoyed the sense of earning money. Believe me, looking for appropriate job and living a work life is a whole set of different experience. Further, change is inevitable in life, therefore, open up your arms and welcome a new chapter in life.

There are numerous job opportunities for you as you did Bachelor's in Commerce such as in banking sector, in school as a teacher, in a company as a team member. Honestly, it will be little tough to secure a job but where exist a will so does way.

Wishing you all the best for your career.

Best regards,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task. The letter clearly explains why Mohan would not enjoy going to college by highlighting that he already has enough theoretical knowledge from his three years of graduation. The second bullet point is well covered by explaining that working provides a unique experience, a sense of earning money, and a fresh chapter in life. Furthermore, the response appropriately suggests suitable jobs such as working in the banking sector, as a school teacher, or as a team member in a company, given his Bachelor's in Commerce. The tone is consistently friendly and appropriate for a letter to a friend. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the ideas are fully developed and supported without any irrelevant information, fully satisfying the requirements of the task at a high band level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas from paragraph to paragraph. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the first introduces the choice and advises getting a job based on past study; the second discusses the value of earning and experiencing a work life; the third provides specific job suggestions. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'At same time', 'Further', and 'therefore' are used to connect ideas, although a couple of linking phrases are slightly unnatural (e.g., 'At same time'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing is generally clear throughout the response, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a semi-formal letter, using less common items and collocations such as 'confronted with a choice', 'theortical knowledge' (spelling error: theoretical), 'practical field', and 'change is inevitable'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'field job' instead of 'entry-level job' or 'full-time job', and minor typographical and spelling errors like 'theortical' and 'a right time' instead of 'the right time'. However, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings, and the occasional errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably in the band 7 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'As you looking for my advice, I will rather suggest you...'). There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing auxiliary verbs ('As you looking for'), missing articles ('this a right time', 'a whole set of different experience'), and an idiomatic error in the final paragraph ('where exist a will so does way' instead of 'where there's a will, there's a way'). Despite these errors, a good portion of the sentences are error-free, punctuation is generally sound, and the errors do not impede overall comprehension.
