Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear friend,

I hope this letter finds you well and you enjoyed this summer alot! It has been way long time since we caught up.

I recently received your letter seeking advice about wheteher to go to collage or try to get a job.

To be honest with you, You should try to get a job as you had been already completed master degree in chemical engineering. And now you wanted to complete PhD.

As per my opinion, Master degree is completely enough to get standard attractive salary package in any reputed chemical or oil & gas industries. You can get a job in research and development area too.

Once you get a job in oil and gas refinery, you will support your family financially and you could achive your dreams, However, you reached at certain age that now you need to get marry and for that you have to earn decent amount of money.

Hope i could explained very well and waiting for your phone to discuss more on it or we could go out some cafe to spend some time and make some memories.

Yours faithfully,

Maddy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. The writer addresses the prompt by explaining why further college (a PhD) is unnecessary, why getting a job is a good idea, and suggesting specific types of roles, such as working in research and development or within an oil and gas refinery. The position is clear throughout, and ideas are extended with relevant personal context, such as mentioning the friend's existing master's degree in chemical engineering and personal milestones. While some parts could be further expanded for a higher band, the overall coverage meets the requirements well and aligns with a Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a clear logical organisation, moving appropriately from an opening greeting and pleasantries to the core advice, reasons, job suggestions, and a warm closing. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as the advice against college versus the employment suggestions. However, some cohesive devices and referencing are occasionally awkward or mechanical, such as 'As per my opinion' and 'Once you get a job in oil and gas refinery, you will support your family financially and you could achive your dreams, However, you reached at certain age...', which creates some run-on phrasing and punctuation issues. Overall progression is clear, supporting a solid Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'chemical engineering', 'research and development area', and 'attractive salary package'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('wheteher', 'collage', 'achive') and minor word choice or collocation inaccuracies ('you enjoyed this summer alot', 'way long time'). Less common lexical items are attempted, but spelling and precision issues restrict the score to Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and time clauses ('Once you get a job in oil and gas refinery, you will support your family...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense issues ('you had been already completed', 'now you wanted to complete'), missing articles ('in oil and gas refinery', 'at certain age'), and punctuation errors like comma splices ('...dreams, However, you reached...'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
