Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Ranvir,
I hope you are doing great. I am happy that you reached out to me for a suggestion regarding choosing between continuing studies and starting work. I know you since childhood, and I have always seen you showing more interest in practical work instead of lectures and exams. Although you will gain more theoretical knowledge while going to college, getting a job will give you more exposure to real market trends.
If you start working, you can become financially stable and can raise funds to pursue your future career plans. It would be a waste of time to pursue further studies without having interest.
You have always shown great interest in building your career as a successful entrepreneur. Thus, searching for sales and marketing related jobs would give you the opportunity to gain insight into the business world. I hope my advice will assist you in choosing your path wisely.
Your Lovingly,
Manjeet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully and effectively addresses all bullet points outlined in the prompt. You adopt a friendly and natural tone suitable for writing to a peer, and your purpose is clear from the beginning. You successfully explain why your friend Ranvir might not enjoy college by pointing out his historical preference for practical work over lectures and exams, stating that studying theoretical concepts without interest would be a waste of time. You then explain why getting a job is beneficial, noting that it builds financial stability and helps raise funds for future goals. Finally, you suggest suitable jobs aligned with his entrepreneurial aspirations, specifically recommending roles in sales and marketing to gain business world insight. All parts of the task are well developed and supported with relevant ideas, demonstrating strong communicative competence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
Your letter shows clear logical progression and a natural, cohesive structure appropriate for personal correspondence. The layout is well-organised into distinct paragraphs, each handling a specific part of the prompt. You successfully open with an appropriate greeting, transition smoothly into the advice body paragraphs, and close with a fitting sign-off. Cohesive devices and referencing are handled effectively; for example, using words like 'Although', 'Thus', and 'If you start working' links your ideas logically without feeling mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader effortlessly from your personal history with Ranvir to concrete employment suggestions.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for a general correspondence task. Words and phrases such as 'practical work', 'theoretical knowledge', 'financial stability', and 'entrepreneur' reflect accurate and natural lexical choices. You also attempt less common vocabulary items like 'exposure to real market trends' and 'insight into the business world' with good control over collocation and style. While there is a slight slip in your sign-off phrase ('Your Lovingly' instead of 'Yours lovingly' or 'Yours affectionately'), it is a minor inaccuracy that does not impede communication or strain the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully handle subordinate clauses and conditional constructions, as seen in sentences like 'Although you will gain more theoretical knowledge while going to college, getting a job will give you more exposure to real market trends.' The majority of your sentences are grammatically accurate, showing good control over tense usage and punctuation. The minor error in the sign-off ('Your Lovingly') and a slight preposition slip in your opening ('I know you since childhood' instead of 'I have known you since childhood') are occasional and do not detract from the overall clarity of your message.
