Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all bullet points of the task. The letter adopts an appropriate informal and friendly tone suitable for a letter to a friend. The writer clearly states why college might not be enjoyable or practical, explaining the financial burdens such as paying a 'foutune' and taking out bank loans. Furthermore, the response explains the benefits of getting a job, highlighting financial independence and the acquisition of practical skills and training directly from an employer. Finally, the letter suggests suitable types of jobs, specifically recommending IT roles and mentioning platforms like indeed and job career. The position is clear throughout, and all parts of the prompt are covered well, making this a strong performance for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is generally coherent and has a clear logical progression overall. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the discussion of disadvantages of college, the advantages of employment, and the concluding recommendations and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Also' are utilised to structure the arguments, although some transitions feel slightly repetitive with the consecutive use of 'Moreover'. The relationship between ideas is logical, and referencing throughout the letter is mostly clear, allowing the reader to follow the writer's advice easily without confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and lexical items such as 'financial independence', 'comprehensive training', and 'higher education'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the quality, such as 'foutune' instead of 'fortune', 'studing' instead of 'studying', 'significiant' instead of 'significant', and 'persuading' instead of 'pursuing'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly and maintains an appropriate semi-formal tone for a friend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('peers who have to pay', 'because they donot have all the means'). While there are frequent error-free sentences, several grammatical and mechanical errors persist throughout the text, including 'to looking for a job' instead of 'to look for a job', 'donot' as a single unspaced word, 'the saving you made' missing a plural 's', and lowercase 'i' pronouns ('i hope', 'i am'). Punctuation also needs minor attention around spacing in places like 'job career. i hope'. Nonetheless, these errors rarely impede overall communication.
