Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sakshi,

I am writing this mail in response to your letter regarding your seeking my advise on whether to go to college or to try to a get a job.

I strongly recommend you to at this phase of life you should look for a job and get some experience instead of going for another course or degree.

As you recently graduated with a bachelors degree in business, pursuing or going for masters immediately would not make sense as market is very dyanamic and by the time you will graduate market demands might shift or change. Similarly, companies these days look for a candidate with specific specialization rather than a one having a general academic qualification.

Movingahead, getting into corporate world will not only help you with your finances but also help you understand the potential, dyanmics and scope of the corporate world. Meanwhile, you will be building network and ehnacing your communication and other skills which will help you your overall devolopment, growth and enhancing skill sets.

In a nutshell, the kind of explosure you willl get at this young age will hold more value than that of any degree and you will be unbeatable.

As you're a business graduate, I would suggested you to try your luck in finance and marketing. You can choose finance if you love numbers and interest in accounting. Finance field is opportunistic and can offer your a strong and stable career. while marketing career requires you to be creative.

At the end, the decision if completely your. Take your time and decide what could be best for you.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Your sincerely,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You adopt a clear, friendly, and advisory tone suitable for a letter to a friend. You address why Sakshi might not enjoy or benefit from going straight to college by highlighting market dynamics and the shift towards specialization. You clearly explain why getting a job is advantageous, noting financial benefits, corporate exposure, and skill-building. Finally, you successfully suggest suitable fields, specifically mentioning finance and marketing, and tailor the reasons to her business background. The ideas are well-developed and fully extend the prompt's requirements, meeting all the criteria for a solid Band 7.5 to 8 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing distinct points, and an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas, such as the critique of pursuing a master's degree versus the benefits of entering the workforce. You use helpful cohesive devices like 'As you recently graduated', 'Moving ahead', and 'In a nutshell' to guide the reader through your argument. While most transitions work well, a few transitional phrases are slightly clunky or contain minor spacing issues (e.g., 'Movingahead'), which prevents the cohesion from reaching the highest bands. Overall, progression is clear and logical throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to a business context, employing words and phrases such as 'market dynamics', 'specialization', 'corporate world', and 'exposure'. There are, however, a few spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'dyanamic' instead of 'dynamic', 'ehnacing' instead of 'enhancing', 'devolopment' instead of 'development', and 'explosure' instead of 'exposure'. Additionally, some word choices could be more precise, such as 'interest in accounting' instead of 'interested in accounting'. These occasional inaccuracies place your lexical score firmly in the Band 6.5 territory, as they show an attempt at less common vocabulary with some spelling lapses.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional clauses, relative clauses, and multi-clause sentences effectively (e.g., 'As you're a business graduate, I would suggested you to try your luck in finance and marketing.'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'seeking my advise' (advice), 'recommend you to at this phase of life' (mixed structure), 'market is very dyanamic' (missing article), and 'the decision if completely your' (is completely yours). You also make a mistake with verb forms in 'I would suggested you to'. Despite these recurring minor errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing for a comfortable Band 6.0.
