Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Kennedy,

I hope you are doing well and keeping fine. I am writing to let you know that l'd prefer you to get a job rather than going to college for studies. Unless, you choose otherwise, I'd given you my piece of advice.

Firstly, the major reason why you won't probably fancy going to school is because of the long lecture hours and assignments which can be quite exhausting and boring at same time. Secondly, work experience would help you on the long run, whereas some skills are not always taught in the class room. On the one hand, I'd prefer you gain the hands-on pratical experience rather than classroom which focus on the theoritical aspect.

Similarly, why gettimg a job is a good idea is because you can dvelope useful skills like communication, time managment and you can even be self employed. But will a job experience help in the future? definitely it will. In addition? work experience would help with better career prospects.

I'd also like ti recommend certain types of jobs for you such as, sales assistance, customer service representative and office assitant. These are the varities so that yiu can be able to pick a choice on which suits you best. If you can look into them, and see which one has a better pay, then you can conclude .

I would be glad if my request is given due consideration and attention.

Best regards,

Felix

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt effectively. You successfully explain why Kennedy might not enjoy college by mentioning long lecture hours and exhausting assignments. You also provide reasons why getting a job is a good idea, highlighting the development of useful skills like communication and time management, as well as long-term career prospects. Finally, you suggest suitable types of jobs, such as a sales assistant, customer service representative, and office assistant. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. The ideas are adequately supported and extended, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from introduction to arguments against college, arguments for a job, job suggestions, and a closing remark. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as grouping the job suggestions in their own paragraph. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In addition' are employed to structure the response, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'Similarly, why gettimg a job is a good idea'. Overall, the logical organization is clear, but referencing and cohesion occasionally show minor faults, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'career prospects', 'self-employed', and 'communication'. However, there are several spelling and typographical errors, such as 'pratical' instead of practical, 'theoritical' instead of theoretical, 'gettimg', 'dvelope', 'managment', 'ti', 'assistance' (used as a noun for a person), and 'yiu'. These errors, alongside some awkward phrasing like 'keeping fine', do not impede communication but prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. You attempt less common vocabulary, but accuracy needs improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'Unless, you choose otherwise, I'd given you my piece of advice' and 'jobs for you such as, sales assistance, customer service representative and office assitant'). There are several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation slips throughout the text, including comma splices and tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'I'd given you' instead of 'I am giving you'). While these errors are noticeable, the meaning remains clear and they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. This represents a solid Band 6 level of grammatical control.
