Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Matthew,

How're you? I'm glad that you asked for my advice about whether to go to college or to try to get a job. In my opinion, you should get a job.

In college, you've to sit for long hours, attend lectures and doing assignments. I don't think it's your cup of tea. In the end, there will be an exams, after graduation ended up in seaching for job.

Instead getting a job is a good idea because firstly, it helps you in gaining job experience which will definitely help you in getting better job in future. Secondly, it gives you an opportunity to learn professional skills which are essential in practical life, such as team work, coordination, improving communication skills.

I think jobs in customer service likely to be in marketing department in car sale agency should be suitable for you as I know you love talking to people, have a significant knowledge about different models of cars and have more convincing power. This area would be great for you to start, you are going to cummunicate different people and ehance your knowledge about automobiles.

I hope this information will help you in making right decision. Please feel free to contact me, if you need any other information.

With Love,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a natural, friendly tone appropriate for a General Training letter. The writer clearly addresses why Matthew would not enjoy college, explains why getting a job is a beneficial alternative, and suggests suitable types of employment, such as customer service in a car sales agency. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, with appropriate supporting details regarding Matthew's personality and interests, such as his convincing power and love for automobiles. The tone remains consistent throughout the letter, and the purpose is fully achieved, satisfying all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different points, moving naturally from the introduction to college drawbacks, job benefits, specific suggestions, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Instead', 'firstly', and 'Secondly' are used to guide the reader through the arguments, although some transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraph breaks help maintain a coherent and readable structure throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for an informal yet advisory letter. Expressions such as 'cup of tea', 'practical life', 'customer service', and 'convincing power' show a good grasp of functional language. However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'seaching for job' (searching for a job), 'Instead getting a job' (Instead, getting a job), and 'ehance' (enhance). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like advice. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly in verb forms and prepositions, such as 'you've to sit', 'doing assignments', 'an exams', 'cummunicate different people', and missing articles like 'a job'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear. The majority of basic structures are handled well, and punctuation is generally accurate.
