Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
Hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter to you regarding the advice for choosing either options such as you should take further studies or have to join any company for work.
First of all, I know very well, you were not interested in reading at school. It seems to you boring . That is why, you always got passing marks in your study. Hence, if you are going to college then definetly you will get less marks which will be totally wastage of money.
I think, you should do work instead of doing study because you can earn for yourself which will make you independent and this will teach you the value of money.
Last but not least, you should do a job in a restaurant through which you will get to know about customer service, good communication skills and also will have leadership skill at a position. Consequently, it will be helpful for your future as well.
Hope you will understand what I want to say and this may have best advice for you.
Best Wishes,
Taran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You adopt a clear tone appropriate for a letter to a friend and address the three main requirements: why he would not enjoy college, why getting a job is beneficial, and what type of job would suit him. For instance, you mention that he was not interested in reading at school and that getting a job will teach him the value of money. You also suggest working in a restaurant. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and rely on general statements rather than deeper explanations, such as the comment about getting passing marks. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fulfilling the necessary criteria for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with a clear greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the reasons against college, the benefits of working, and specific job suggestions. Cohesive devices and transition markers are used, such as 'First of all', 'Hence', 'I think', and 'Last but not least'. However, some of the cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing in places is a bit awkward, such as 'regarding the advice for choosing either options such as you should take further studies'. Despite these minor flaws, progression is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your personal opinions to a friend. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'independent', 'customer service', and 'communication skills'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, writing 'choosing either options such as you should take further studies or have to join any company' is unnatural, 'reading at school' would be better expressed as 'academic study', and 'total wastage of money' contains a slight grammatical awkwardness. Spelling is generally accurate, but the restricted precision in lexical choices keeps the score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. You successfully use conditional structures and subordinate clauses, such as 'Hence, if you are going to college then definetly you will get less marks'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips that occur throughout the text, including subject-verb inconsistencies and awkward phrasing like 'you should do work instead of doing study'. There is also a spelling mistake with 'definetly'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score.
