Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Priya,

I hope you are doing well.

I received your letter from you that you want my opinion about joining a college or finding a job.I would recommend you to search for a job opportunity as it will be more beneficial for you.

I know that you would be not enjoying if you go to college owing to the fact that you already have the potential and knowledge as well as the age factor of the collegeous.

As you have already gained the theoritical knowledge so you should find a job which not works as a source of income for you but also you have the prospective growth opportunity in the future. This will help us in securing a good future.

As you have commerce background and have strong hands on numeric figures so I recommed you to search for a job as an accountant or a bookkeeper. Moreover, these jobs have higher salaries and if you work on your own field of study, you will be able to perform much better.

I hope you will consider my suggestion and opt for a suitable job.

Yours truely,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task requirements for this General Training letter. You addressed why Priya would not enjoy college, such as mentioning the age factor and her existing potential, and you explained why getting a job is beneficial by highlighting future growth opportunities. Furthermore, you provided specific job suggestions suitable for someone with a commerce background, namely an accountant or a bookkeeper. The tone is appropriate for writing to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To push closer to a higher band, some of the ideas regarding why she would dislike college could have been expanded with a bit more detail, but overall all bullet points are well addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing format. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different points, such as the reason against college, the benefits of a job, and the specific job recommendations. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using words like 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'As'. However, there are minor cohesion issues and clunky phrasing in places, such as 'I received your letter from you that you want...', which affects the overall fluidity of the transition into the main topic. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas remains clear throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms related to commerce and employment, such as 'potential', 'source of income', 'prospective growth opportunity', and 'bookkeeper'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'age factor of the collegeous' (where 'collegeous' is a non-standard word) and 'strong hands on numeric figures' instead of 'strong numerical skills'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some word choices lack precision, which keeps this criterion at the band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using subordinate clauses introduced by 'owing to the fact that', 'As you have already gained', and 'if you work on your own field'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including 'which not works as a source of income' (missing auxiliary verb placement) and 'Yours truely' (spelling error in the sign-off). While these errors do not impede overall communication and you maintain control over basic grammar, the frequency of structural flaws prevents a higher score.
