Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Jon,
I am happy to assist you about what you would like to do in future.
first of all, I recommend that you need to find job and start geeting experience from your field. Moreover, right now in cut throught compitition you need to upgrade yourself with more experience on hand as compared to just have a valid degree certification.
Its my personal experience that, i have seen many people face problem after spending so much money to get a degree and at the end they survive to get good job. On the other hand, if you get a job you can earn money at your early age, that would be beneficial for your career. Althogh, taking part-time course while working that would be an excellent idea.
To my mind, going into the college and spending money is not worth it.
In addition, if you would like to find job in the AI that would be really great for your career.
If you need any further information regarding this feel free to ask me.
Thank you,
Raaj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You begin by saying why college might not be fully satisfying or worth the money, stating that going into college and spending money is not worth it. You then explain why getting a job is a good idea, mentioning the benefits of earning an early age and gaining hands-on experience in a competitive environment. Finally, you suggest a suitable field by stating that finding a job in AI would be really great. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive and under-developed, such as the explanation about college, which lacks depth. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly for a letter to a friend. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter structure, opening with a greeting and closing with an appropriate sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'first of all', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to link your ideas together. However, paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, with several very short paragraphs that could be grouped more effectively. Additionally, referencing and logical progression are occasionally faulty, such as the sudden shift into discussing part-time courses without a smooth transition. Cohesion is at times mechanical rather than natural. These limitations place the response comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptor range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary choice shows an adequate range for the task, with attempts at less common expressions such as 'cut throught compitition', 'degree certification', and 'hands-on experience'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'geeting' instead of 'getting', 'compitition' instead of 'competition', 'have' instead of 'having', and the phrase 'they survive to get good job', which is unnatural. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in lexical control. The range is minimally sufficient to convey your main points, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variety. For example, you use conditional structures like 'if you get a job you can earn money' and 'if you would like to find job'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'I am happy to assist you about what you would like to do in future' (preposition error), 'I recommend that you need to find job' (missing article), and 'Althogh, taking part-time course while working that would be an excellent idea' (fragment and comma splice). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate inconsistent control over complex structures, aligning with a Band 5.5.
