Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Emma,

I am so thrilled to hear from you that you are asking for my opinion to take a crucial step either to join a college or start a job.

As you are desperate to be independent, joining college will not provide you with the opportunity to earn money. Along with this there will be excessive burden of assignments, exams and so on which will frustrate you unlike to gain hands-on experience.

Bing employed will be a suitable option for you because you can gain first hand experience in a professional setting which will help you to shape your personality. Also, this opportunity can teach you plenty of valuable skills such as communication, time management, problem solving and so on.

I know you recently completed your secondary school which makes you qualify for jobs like a receptionist in a hotel or restaurant, work as a customer service representative and so on. These jobs demands someone who is flexible for work and a strong personality who can express himself and undoubtedly you are this person.

I hope you find my advise useful. Don't hesitate to contact if you need further information.

All the Best,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully covered all the requirements of the prompt. You addressed why Emma would not enjoy going to college by mentioning the lack of financial independence and the excessive burden of assignments and exams. You explained why getting a job is a good idea by highlighting first-hand professional experience and valuable skill acquisition. Furthermore, you suggested suitable jobs such as a hotel receptionist or a customer service representative and linked them well to her personality. Your tone is appropriately friendly and consistent throughout the letter. The ideas are well-extended and clearly presented, satisfying all the descriptors for a strong band score in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a polite concluding paragraph. You used appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'Along with this' and 'Also' to connect your ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could be slightly more varied to ensure smoother transitions between sentences. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid performance in coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrated an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'desperate to be independent', 'hands-on experience', and 'professional setting' show a good grasp of functional language. However, there are a few minor lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'joining college' instead of 'going to college', 'desperate' used slightly too strongly for wanting independence, and 'advise' instead of 'advice'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You utilized a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As you are desperate to be independent, joining college will not provide you with the opportunity to earn money.' There are several instances of error-free sentences, demonstrating decent control of grammar. However, a few grammatical and punctuation errors are present, such as missing commas before relative clauses ('jobs like a receptionist... which makes you qualify') and a slight preposition error ('contact if you need' instead of 'contact me'). These errors do not impede communication, placing your grammar control firmly in the competent range.
