Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you and your family are doing well! I'm writing this to suggest you that, you should get a job.

I believe you'd not enjoy going to college, because you have alreday spent five years in the college and have completed your master's degree in management. The atmostphere in the colleges has changed completely. The way of study is different now and it would be difficult for you to adjust in this new era.

Having a job is the best thing, as it will not only help you financially, but also you will gain practical work experience. Furthermore, at a workplace you may get chnace to meet different kinds of people from senior management, who can help you to get promotion easily

I would advise you to start a job in the banking sector. There are a number of job positions available in various banks nowadays. You have master's degree in finance which makes you a suitable candidate to apply for a job at a bank.

All the best for your future! Keep in touch.

Warm regards,

Jass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. You successfully addressed the first bullet point by explaining why Sam might not enjoy college, mentioning that he has already spent five years completing a master's degree in management and that the academic environment has changed. You also covered the second point by highlighting the financial and practical benefits of getting a job, and the third point by suggesting a suitable role in the banking sector based on his finance background. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend. Ideas are generally clear and supported, although some points could have been extended slightly further. Overall, the task requirements have been well fulfilled.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a greeting, an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each bullet point separately, and an appropriate closing sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'as it will not only help you' are used to connect ideas, although referencing can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the letter. Overall, cohesion supports the flow of the message effectively without causing any confusion for the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'practical work experience', 'senior management', and 'banking sector'. However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'suggest you that' instead of 'suggest that', and a few spelling or typographical errors like 'atmostphere' and 'chnace'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and naturally in most parts of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. You successfully utilised complex sentences such as 'I believe you'd not enjoy going to college, because you have already spent...'. However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, notably 'suggest you that, you should get a job' and missing articles like 'You have master's degree'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well managed, and these minor errors rarely impede communication.
