Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Naznin,

How is everything? I am writing in response to your question regarding opt for study or directly get a job. I recommend you to find a decent job for the time being.

Being an outgoing person I think you will get bored because of long lectures and the assisgnments it brings. Rather I think you should apply for the good positions.

The first benefit of getting a job is that it makes you independent person. Secondly, it brings confidence in you and help you to keep motivated in your future goals.

Being an extrovert person, I believe you should go for customer service kind of jobs. Where you will be communicating with different kind of people and it will also help you in your upcoming course of mass media.

I hope my suggestion sounds reasonable to you and I am waiting to see you on one of the customer service position soon.

Warm wishes,

Hamza

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a friendly and appropriate tone. You address the reader's question directly by suggesting a job over college, explaining why college would not be enjoyed due to long lectures and assignments, and providing clear reasoning for why working is a good idea. Furthermore, you suggest a specific type of job, namely customer service, and link it helpfully to the reader's upcoming course in mass media. The position is clear throughout the letter. To reach a higher level, some of the ideas could be extended further with more detailed examples or broader discussion, rather than moving quickly from one point to the next, which is characteristic of this band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and coherent arrangement. Paragraphing is used logically to separate different points, such as the critique of college, the general benefits of employment, and the specific job suggestions. Cohesive devices are present, such as transitional phrases like 'The first benefit' and 'Secondly', which help guide the reader through your arguments. However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical, and referencing between sentences could be smoother to achieve the seamless flow required at the next level. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and meets the requirements of a well-organized personal letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'outgoing', 'independent person', 'extrovert', and 'mass media'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by slight inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'regarding opt for study' instead of 'regarding whether to study'. Spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'assisgnments', do not impede communication. To improve your lexical score further, you should aim for greater precision in phrasing and incorporate a wider variety of natural, less common lexical items with correct collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of sentence structure. You successfully incorporate relative clauses, such as 'Where you will be communicating with different kind of people'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('apply for the good positions'), prepositions ('waiting to see you on one of the customer service position'), and gerund usage ('regarding opt for'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur regularly enough to keep the writing at this level. To move up, you should focus on eliminating minor grammatical slips and increasing the proportion of error-free complex sentences.
