Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sarah,
First of all, I hope you are in perfect health and I am writing in response to your request about continuing to go to college or getting a job. Well in my opinion, I think that after having completed your Grade 11 and with poor academic results, better option will be to get a job.
I recalled of what you told me last time we met about your disinterest in studying and your passion about mechanic works. In this regards, I would recommend you to look for a job in a cycle workshop where you could work and at the same time learn the basic mechanic works. If you are interested, I have a friend who is actually looking for someone to work in his workshop and I can talked to him if you agree.
Moreover, there are some companies dealing with car repairs which you could try to send your CV or telephone them to inquire about any job vacancy. I just heard of a job fair to be held next week at Bagatelle and this would be a good opportunity for you to try your luck there.
I wish you all the best and please write to me to inform me what you have decided.
With warm wishes,
Faranaz J

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all parts of the prompt by explaining why Sarah would not enjoy going to college due to her poor academic results, offering reasons why getting a job is a good idea given her passion for mechanics, and suggesting suitable types of work such as a cycle workshop or car repair companies. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the suggestion about the job fair at Bagatelle is introduced quite briefly without much expansion on how it will help her specifically. To move to a higher band, ensure that every single bullet point is explored with equal depth and fully elaborated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression from opening the correspondence to discussing college, moving to specific job recommendations, and closing with warm wishes. You use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately, dedicating distinct paragraphs to each main topic. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and referencing pronouns are used reasonably well to connect your ideas, maintaining an overall coherent arrangement throughout the piece.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'disinterest', 'passion', 'vacancy', and 'opportunity'. You also attempt less common vocabulary, though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'mechanic works' instead of 'mechanical work' or 'mechanics', and 'basic mechanic works'. Additionally, there are minor lexical slips like 'better option will be' missing an article. These minor errors do not impede communication, but eliminating them and using more precise collocations would elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, such as conditional clauses ('If you are interested...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as tense consistency issues like 'I recalled of what you told me' (instead of 'I recall' or 'I recall what you told me'), and 'I can talked to him' (instead of 'can talk'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your message to be understood clearly. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over verb forms.
