Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Simran,

I hope this letter finds you well. It was great to catch up with you recently.

Last week, I received a letter from you. You asked for my advice on choosing work or study. I would suggest you to find a professional job rather than continuing study. I already done my Masters but nowadays, there is more value of skill. I felt boring while going regular college because we have to study by our own. So, its better if you get job, earn money. There are various positive effects when you get a job. Mainly, you'll be able to fulfill needs of your family, stay independent, you don't need to do care of society about expenses. Moreover, it will teach you the relationship between money and life. I am sure you'll learn how to save money for your upcoming future. If possible, you can also initiate a business of your own. I would suggest you some jobs which are suitable for you. Additionally, no background experience is required in these jobs. Such as Artificial Intelligence, Monitoring, Freelancing, AI Tutor. Please let me know if you need my assistance while applying for the job. I can also provide you reference. Give my best to everyone at your home and write back when you get a chance. Best wishes,

Jasmeen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the letter prompt, fulfilling the general task requirements nicely. You establish an appropriate informal tone right from the opening greeting to Simran. You mention why college might not be enjoyable, explaining that you 'felt boring while going regular college' and that studying independently is unappealing. You also explain why getting a job is beneficial, such as being able to 'fulfill needs of your family' and stay independent, and you suggest suitable job types like 'Artificial Intelligence, Monitoring, Freelancing, AI Tutor'. While all three bullet points are addressed, some ideas remain a little under-developed or brief, preventing a higher evaluation. To reach the next level, you could expand more fully on why college life specifically lacks appeal for your friend's personal goals and provide richer detail regarding the recommended career paths.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader naturally through the various points. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your opening, your reasons against college, the benefits of working, your job suggestions, and your closing remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'Last week', 'Mainly', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally' are employed to link your thoughts together, though referencing and linking feel slightly mechanical or abrupt in places, such as the sudden shift when introducing the job suggestions. To progress further, ensure that transitions between paragraphs flow with greater naturalness and that cohesive relationships are always clear and seamless for the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range to communicate your ideas clearly for this task, utilizing functional phrases such as 'catch up', 'professional job', and 'independent'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'I already done my Masters' (grammar crossover aside, the phrasing is clumsy), 'I felt boring' instead of 'I felt bored', and listing 'Artificial Intelligence' as a job title rather than a field. Spelling and word forms show some control, but less common vocabulary is attempted with occasional errors. To achieve a higher band, focus on precise word choice, accurate collocations, and using a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, including conditional structures like 'If possible, you can also initiate a business' and 'If you need my assistance'. However, there are several grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('getting job', 'going regular college'), incorrect verb patterns ('suggest you to find' instead of 'suggest that you find' or 'suggest finding'), and preposition issues. These errors occur regularly alongside your complex structures, though they rarely impede overall communication. To move up to the next band, you should aim for a higher frequency of error-free sentences and tighten your control over verb complementation, articles, and prepositions.
