Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only seventy-six words, and is well short of the one-hundred-and-fifty-word minimum. Eight words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the count. Because of this extreme brevity, the task is addressed only minimally. While the writer touches upon the bullet points by suggesting college would not be enjoyed if the reader is uninterested, advising them to get a job to gain experience, and listing a few job types like freelancing and marketing, these ideas are extremely underdeveloped and lack any real extension or explanation. To improve, the writer must fully expand upon each bullet point with detailed reasons and examples, while ensuring the overall word count target is successfully reached.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response suffers from a significant lack of coherent organisation and proper formatting. The entire letter is written as a single, dense block of text without any paragraph breaks to separate the greeting, the different bullet points, or the closing thoughts. Furthermore, there is an absence of logical progression and cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly from one idea to the next. The transitions between the point about not enjoying college and the suggestion to get a job feel abrupt and disconnected. To achieve a higher band, the writer must organise the letter into clear, distinct paragraphs corresponding to the different parts of the task and use appropriate cohesive links such as connectors and pronouns to establish a clear logical flow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and basic, with noticeable errors that occasionally strain communication. The vocabulary deployed is repetitive, relying on simple phrases like "get a job" and "interested to contiune your studies." There are also spelling errors such as "contiune" instead of continue and "expreince" instead of experience, alongside awkward word forms like "sales girl" instead of sales assistant or sales representative. The range of vocabulary is restricted and minimally adequate for the task. To move towards a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more natural range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items related to careers and education, while eliminating spelling mistakes and improving overall word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting primarily of basic sentence structures joined haphazardly. There are frequent grammatical errors that impede comprehension, such as the incorrect prepositional use in "interested to contiune" instead of interested in continuing, and the comma splice and missing subject in "cause if your not interested..." where "your" is incorrectly used instead of "you're". Punctuation is largely neglected, and capitalization rules are ignored at the beginning of sentences and after punctuation marks. To elevate the grammar score, the writer must demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures, including accurate complex sentences, and improve control over basic mechanics such as verb forms, contractions, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation.
