Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sonu,
I hope you are doing well. I just got your letter regarding the advice which you asked me that should you go college or find a job. If you ask for my advice then you should start finding a job rather than going to college.
I am not saying that college is not important but looking into your recent performance in your college it better to give more time to find job because in college right now there is nothing important going on in lectures so you can skip so of them as they are so boring and goes for hours and hours in the college.
Futhermore, I think if you focus on finding a job that you can get some experience before going in the real world for finding your permanent job that will be so useful to you.
Moreover, search for the jobs which are useful to you like part-time jobs that can help you build your skills while studying or find paid internship where you can work on different projects which will help you building your portfolio.
I hope you will follow this advice which you gave. I wish you get sucess in your future.
Best regards,
Dhruvil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the general training letter successfully. You introduce the purpose of the letter to Sonu clearly and cover all three bullet points from the prompt: you say why he would not enjoy college by mentioning boring and lengthy lectures, you explain why getting a job is beneficial to gain real-world experience, and you suggest suitable types of employment such as part-time jobs and paid internships. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of why college lectures are boring is somewhat repetitive and lacks specific detail, and your suggestions for job types remain fairly general. To reach a higher level, you need to extend your supporting points with more elaboration and vivid examples rather than circling back to the same ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a generally coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear, friendly letter format with an appropriate greeting and sign-off. You successfully use basic cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as "Furthermore" and "Moreover" to introduce additional arguments. Paragraphing is used to separate your distinct points, which helps the reader follow the flow of your reasoning from college disadvantages to job recommendations. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as when you write "the advice which you gave" in your conclusion when Sonu actually asked for your advice. Progression is evident, but the cohesive links feel somewhat mechanical at times rather than seamlessly integrated. To move further up, you should ensure that referencing pronouns are crystal clear and make your transitions between ideas smoother and more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as "permanent job," "part-time jobs," and "paid internship." However, your vocabulary range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation that highlight the constraints of your word bank. For example, writing "looking into your recent performance in your college it better to give more time to find job" contains unnatural phrasing, and the phrase "building your portfolio" is used rather simply. You also make minor word choice slips, such as telling Sonu "I hope you will follow this advice which you gave" instead of asked for. To achieve a stronger score, you need to incorporate a wider variety of precise phrasing and idiomatic expressions while eliminating collocation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, attempting complex structures such as "If you ask for my advice then you should start finding a job rather than going to college." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but these errors rarely impede communication. For instance, you miss necessary articles or prepositions in sentences like "should you go college" instead of "go to college," and "find job" instead of "find a job." Run-on sentences also appear, such as the long sentence beginning with "I am not saying that college is not important..." which could be broken up for better clarity. To reach a higher score, you should aim to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensure accurate control over prepositions and article use.
