Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mike,
I hope you are in healthy condition, I deeply appreciate that you asked for my advice wether to get a job or enroll in college.
I consider that getting a job is much better to be financially strong and independent. In the modern times, college will waste your time by teaching you theory which honestly will not help you in your career. Purseuing a degree is really boring these days which won't facilitate you in the job market.
It's great idea for you to get a proper job and have a beneficial career. Occupation will not only provide you with a stable income but also hands-on experience which will assist you in improving your career. Obtaining practical skills are crucial rather than going after theoretrical education.
There are so many sectors which provide career advancement after some working for a few years. For instance, jobs in hospitality and warehouses. Whichever you consider best for yourself. Even though, it would be a bit struggling during the start but totally worth it.
Best wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all the required parts of the letter. You address why Mike would not enjoy going to college by stating that it wastes time teaching theory that is unhelpful in the career market, and you explain that a job provides a stable income and hands-on experience. Furthermore, you suggest suitable industries such as hospitality and warehouses. However, some of these ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the general assertions about theoretical education being boring without further specific elaboration. To reach a higher level, you need to extend and fully support your main points with more detailed explanations or examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraphing structure that addresses each bullet point in a logical sequence. The friendly tone is established immediately with an appropriate opening greeting. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly in transitions between sentences and paragraphs, such as moving from the second to the third paragraph with 'It's great idea for you...' Referencing and linking devices could be used more flexibly and smoothly to enhance the overall flow. To improve further, ensure that cohesive devices guide the reader seamlessly from one idea to the next without feeling abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'financially strong and independent' and 'career advancement'. However, there are several word choice, collocation, and spelling errors that prevent a higher rating, including 'healthy condition' instead of 'good health', 'wether' instead of 'whether', 'Purseuing' instead of 'Pursuing', and 'theoretrical' instead of 'theoretical'. While these inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and lexical control when attempting less common vocabulary items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I deeply appreciate that you asked for my advice...' and 'Occupation will not only provide you with...'. There are some noticeable grammar errors in punctuation, articles, and agreement, such as 'It's great idea' missing the article 'a', and 'Obtaining practical skills are crucial' where the verb does not agree with the gerund subject. Another error is 'after some working for a few years', which contains an incorrect prepositional pattern. These errors occur across a mix of structures, but they rarely impede overall communication.
