Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nidhi,

I hope you're doing well. I am writing this in resposne to your letter about guidance that you needed on whether to enroll in college or join company to get awareness about real world. I would suggest you to opt for a job to gain hands-on expereince.

To begin with, after enrolling in college you will only recieve theoratical knowledge. Also, they have more assignmnets and homework that needs to be done on time to pass the program. Therefore, it will be headache and stress for you.

If you get a job then you get an opportunity to learn practical skills, experience work environment, and you start earning a salary and become financially independent immidiately. As I know that you are strugling financially from past 5 years, thus, this would be the best option for you.

There are number of possions in which you can gain experience such as customer service representative, office asstance, and team member in retail company. I kniw that you are extrovert so these roles are suitable for you.

I am so excited for your new job! Give my regards to your mom and dad.

Warm regards,

Fairy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and make your recommendation clear from the opening: “I would suggest you to opt for a job.” You explain why college may not suit Nidhi by mentioning theoretical study, assignments and stress, then connect employment to practical skills, income and financial independence. The examples of customer service, office assistance and retail work also respond directly to the request, and the friendly closing suits a letter to a friend. The advice about college and the job options are relevant, though they could be developed further—for example, explain more specifically why these roles match her interests or strengths. Overall, the response covers the task clearly, with some ideas supported more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the advice, discusses the disadvantages of college, explains the benefits of work, and then suggests suitable roles. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, while phrases such as “To begin with,” “Therefore,” and “If you get a job” help signal relationships between ideas. The opening and closing also maintain an appropriate personal-letter format. Some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated cause-and-effect transitions, and “As I know that…” makes the connection to the previous point less smooth. You could improve flow by varying transitions and linking the financial situation more directly to the benefit of earning a salary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including relevant expressions such as “hands-on experience,” “practical skills,” and “financially independent.” However, noticeable spelling errors and imprecise word choices reduce clarity and control: “resposne,” “expereince,” “theoratical,” “immidiately,” and “possions” appear in the letter. Some phrases are also unnatural or inaccurate, such as “join company to get awareness about real world” and “office asstance.” These issues fit a limited but functional range: the reader can understand the message, but errors sometimes make them pause. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for education, employment and job titles to make your advice sound more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “If you get a job” presents a conditional idea, while “As I know that you are struggling financially…” attempts to connect a reason to your recommendation. Some grammatical errors remain. In “I would suggest you to opt,” the verb pattern should be “suggest that you opt” or “suggest opting”; “after enrolling in college you will only receive” also needs clearer punctuation after the introductory phrase. In “there are number of positions,” an article is missing, and “assignments and homework that needs” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Review verb patterns, articles and agreement, while keeping the varied sentence structures you are attempting.
