Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rohit,
Hello, how're you? It's been ages since we last met. I'm glad to advice you about your future decision.
I'd suggest you to apply for a job instead of going to college. You're already holding a degree that can make you eligible for a good job. Enrolling in a college would not only be wastage of time but also money.
Getting a job can be a better option for you, as recently your father got into a serious accident, due to that you experienced a lot of financial problems to manage your school fees. So, applying for a job could provide you relevant experience as well as you'd be able to earn money and manage your family responsibilities.
Recently, you've completed Personal Support Worker course, so you can apply for a job either in a hospital or a long-term home. In this way, you can expand your knowledge and learn new and important skills while working that can make you eligible for better position in the future.
I hope this suggestion will help you to make a better decision. See you soon.
Love,
Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You give a clear recommendation to seek work rather than attend college, and you address all three requested points. The reasons are relevant: you mention the cost and time involved in further study, the family’s financial difficulties, and the writer’s Personal Support Worker training. You also suggest suitable workplaces, including a hospital or long-term care home. Some points are less fully developed than others: the claim that college would be a “wastage of time” is asserted rather than linked clearly to Rohit’s goals or circumstances, and the job suggestions could be made more specific by naming roles that match his training. Developing these explanations would make the advice more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with a natural progression from greeting and recommendation to reasons, job suggestions, and a friendly closing. Linking phrases such as “as,” “so,” and “In this way” help show relationships between ideas, and the reader can follow the overall message easily. This is a coherent structure, with some effective progression toward the practical advice. At times, however, connections are a little mechanical or unclear: the long sentence beginning “Getting a job can be a better option” combines the accident, financial problems, and benefits of employment in one chain. Breaking this into shorter sentences and using clearer references would make the cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for an informal advice letter, including relevant terms such as “financial problems,” “relevant experience,” “family responsibilities,” and “long-term home.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for writing to a friend. There are some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, however. “Glad to advice you” uses the wrong form, “wastage of time” is awkward in this context, and “better position” would be more natural with an article. “Long-term home” is also less precise than “long-term care home.” Aim to learn common word partnerships and check whether a noun, verb, or adjective form is needed; this will make your vocabulary more natural without changing your clear message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “not only … but also” and the reason clause beginning “as recently your father got into a serious accident.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the main recommendation is clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with verb patterns and sentence construction: “I’m glad to advice you” should use a verb after “glad to,” while “I’d suggest you to apply” needs a different structure, such as “I’d suggest applying.” The sentence beginning “Getting a job can be a better option” is also overloaded, making the relationship between its clauses difficult to control. Review verb patterns after “suggest” and “glad,” and divide long sentences to improve accuracy and punctuation.
