Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Raman,
Hope you are doing good! i recently received your letter that you want my suggestion about your career because you are not sure about that you should go to college or to try for a job.Well here my point of view is that you should try for a job. i think you will not have any fun at college as this will take more three year of your life for a basic diploma. Also you have to make new friends. Moreover you need to pay more fees.
On the other hand if you go for a job it will help you to get financially stable whether it is a entry level job , But definately you will get experience which will help you in future to get high paid employments.
According to me, you should try in customer service related job as it will built your confidence when you face different situations and how to deal with people. Furthermore it is easy for you to find this type of job.
Yours lovingly,
Gagan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the start: you recommend that Raman look for work rather than attend college. You address all three requested points, explaining that college would involve several years of study, new social demands and fees; you also mention financial stability and experience, and suggest customer service. These are relevant reasons, but some are only briefly stated. For example, explain why making new friends would make college less enjoyable for Raman, or connect the cost and duration more directly to his circumstances. The job advice could also be developed with another suitable role or a more specific reason customer service matches his abilities. The letter covers the task well overall, but fuller support would make the advice more convincing and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the decision, give reasons against college, explain the benefits of employment, and then recommend a job type. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” guide the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, and the long opening paragraph combines several ideas without enough separation. The contrast between college and work is understandable, but the relationship between individual points could be made more explicit—for instance, show how avoiding tuition costs supports financial stability. Use shorter, focused paragraphs and vary transitions so that the organisation feels more natural and the connections between reasons are clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including “financially stable,” “experience,” and “customer service.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “entry level job” and “high paid employments,” but several word choices, collocations and spelling errors reduce naturalness. For example, “get my suggestion” is less idiomatic than “ask for my advice,” while “high paid employments” would be better expressed as “well-paid jobs.” “Built your confidence” should be “build your confidence,” and “definately” is misspelled. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more accurate, natural phrasing and a wider range of job-related vocabulary would improve precision and flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as this will take…” and a conditional idea in “whether it is…”. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “you are not sure about that you should go” (use “whether you should go”), “more three year” (use “three more years”), and “it will built your confidence” (use “it will build your confidence”). There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “a entry level job” and the run-together “job.Well.” Capitalise “I” consistently. Greater control of verb forms, articles and punctuation, alongside varied sentence patterns, would make the letter more accurate and fluent.
