Student answer (Band 5.5)

hi Jane, i hope this letter meets you well. i got your letter seek for advice whether to get a job or to further your education. well, my candid advice for you is that you should get a job. My reasong for this isthat: going to collage now will be so stressful and demanding coupled with your age. i would advice you get a job and leave collage for now hecause you dont have enough fund to pay for your tuition. Also, the stress of preparing for examination and assessment is qiite unbearable. i feel getting a job is a good idea because you really need the money and your house rent will be due soon i will suggest that you go for teaching jobs or care giver jobs. because it will help to enhance your knowledge and also create enough time for you to do other domestic activities. Think about it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a clear recommendation to get a job and address all three points: you explain that college may be stressful and costly, note the need to pay rent, and suggest teaching or caregiver work. These are relevant reasons, so the reader can understand your advice. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, you mention the demands of examinations but do not explain why these would be especially unsuitable for Jane, and the job suggestions would be stronger if linked to her skills or experience. The explanation that these jobs would leave time for domestic activities is also unclear. Add a little personal detail and support each reason to make the advice more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter follows a broadly sensible order: you state your advice, give reasons against college, explain the financial benefit of work, and suggest suitable jobs. This gives the reader an overall sense of progression. However, the ideas are presented in one continuous block, and several connections are abrupt. For instance, “Also” introduces another college-related reason, while “because” begins a sentence fragment after the job suggestions. The transition from needing money to the types of work could also be smoother. Use clear paragraph breaks for the recommendation, reasons, and suggestions, and connect each point with accurate linking phrases. A suitable closing sentence and sign-off would also make the letter feel more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including “stressful and demanding,” “tuition,” “examination and assessment,” and “domestic activities.” These choices show some range beyond very basic language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “reasong,” “collage,” “hecause,” and “qiite.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “my letter meets you well,” “seek for advice,” and “care giver jobs.” Choose more natural expressions such as “I hope you’re well,” “asking for advice,” and “caregiving roles.” Proofreading spelling and checking common collocations would make your message clearer and more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “I feel getting a job is a good idea because you really need the money” and a sentence explaining the demands of college. The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “I would advice you get a job” needs a grammatical pattern such as “I would advise you to get a job,” while “because it will help…” is a fragment when separated from the previous sentence. Several sentences run together without full stops, and capitalisation is inconsistent. Practise complete sentence boundaries, infinitive patterns after verbs such as “advise,” and consistent capital letters. These changes would improve control while preserving your ideas.
