IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given chart illustrates the fluctuation in three metals rate over a month in year of 2014.
Overall, the very first sight shows that rates declined. The price of nickel deliberately decreased with the passage of time and reached its negative peak in January, while others prices also declined but at the end Copper, Nickel and Zinc tries to heal their rates.
In 2014, the rate of change of price in a month for Nickel was 6%, while it linearly declined to 1% in May. Consequently, with the passage of time it observed negative trend and fell below the expected rates such as it decreased to negative 3 percent in January and in the same month tries to recover its depression.
Additionally, it remained at same percent for 9 months, fluctuate and regain its peak.
Furthermore, other metals such as Copper and Zinc fluctuate approximately at the same rates. Zinc observed its greatest depression in January same as Nickel but healed itself. Similarly, the price of Copper varies too and automatically regains its normal rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarise the graph, but it fails to accurately report the data. The description of the trends is confusing and often contradicts the visual information provided in the chart. For example, the claim that nickel reached a 'negative peak in January' and then 'healed' is vague and lacks precise data points. The response struggles to identify the main features or make meaningful comparisons between the three metals. The information provided is often inaccurate or poorly interpreted, leading to a failure to clearly convey the trends shown in the graph. To improve, focus on identifying specific data points and describing the overall movement of the lines more accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices such as 'consequently' and 'furthermore' is often mechanical and does not always logically connect the sentences. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the metals. The flow between sentences is disjointed, and the overall structure lacks the clarity required for a higher band. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are instances of awkward word choices, such as 'healed their rates' and 'greatest depression', which are not appropriate for describing statistical data. The student attempts to use some descriptive language, but it often lacks precision and accuracy. There are also issues with collocation, such as 'fluctuation in three metals rate'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise, academic vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'fluctuated', 'declined', 'remained stable', and 'recovered'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'others prices also declined'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing that hinders clarity. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clumsy. While the meaning is usually discernible, the frequency of errors is high enough to distract the reader. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring correct verb tenses when describing past events would help improve the accuracy of the writing.
