Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 7.0)

A line chart provides detailed data about the fluctuations of metal percentages' prices. The study focuses on copper, nickel and zinc during each month of the 2014 year.

Overall, it is clear that the percentages of theses metals changed greatly during the year with some more than the others.

In fact, while copper and zinc had an overall slight change in their percentages from the start of the year to its end nickel however did not follow such an evolution. For instance, in January both copper and zinc percentages where respectively at 1 and 2 per cents. By the end of the year Copper only decreased by half a per cent and zinc increased by one per centage point. On the other hand nickel went from 6 to 1 per cent. Displaying the greatest change amongst the three. As a matter of fact, from the first month on its prices compared to their previous month ones diped to reach a value of -3 per cent on June. The other two metals had relatively a similar evolvement with a decrease of their percentages, except the first month in which zinc had a peak at 3 per cent. From July to September all of the metals had stable percentages value which were all followed by a decrease in October. Finaly, for the remaining months of the year per centages increased again to reach a similar point of their starting ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points. You successfully identified the significant decline in nickel compared to the relative stability of copper and zinc. However, the description of the data is occasionally imprecise; for example, referring to 'percentages' when the graph likely depicts percentage changes, and some data points are described in a way that is difficult to follow. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the starting values and the fluctuations throughout the year. The overview is present but could be more clearly articulated to highlight the most striking differences between the three metals.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In fact', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'The other two metals had relatively a similar evolvement'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'evolution', and 'stable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'similar evolvement' (development/trend would be better) and 'per centage point' (which is used incorrectly here). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'diped' and 'Finaly'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends and ensure correct spelling of common academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'percentages where respectively' (should be 'were'), 'per centage point', and missing articles or incorrect preposition usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'from the first month on its prices compared to their previous month ones diped'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
