Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main features of the graph, such as the downward trend of nickel and the fluctuations of copper and zinc. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear, analytical overview. The description of the data is repetitive, focusing on individual months rather than synthesizing the trends effectively. While the key features are mentioned, the lack of precise data interpretation and the failure to make meaningful comparisons between the metals limit the score. To improve, you should focus on grouping data points to highlight trends rather than listing figures month-by-month.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In the next month' and 'In the last month' are used excessively, which makes the flow feel stilted. There is a lack of variety in linking words, and the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'meanwhile') to connect sentences and ideas more naturally, ensuring that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'price', 'changed', and 'increased'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'price ratio' and 'namely such as', which are not used correctly in this context. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'declined steadily', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'nickel prices was high', 'copper and zinc prices was up and down') and article usage. There is a reliance on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often marred by errors. For example, 'It price increased in the second month was 3%' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that pronouns are used correctly. Reducing these frequent errors will significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
