IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given graph represents the average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc in the year of 2014.
The Highest rise of metal was nickel with 6% higher than compared with previous month. It has fallen down to -3% in month of J. The metals like copper and zinc have almost the same number of percentages in all the months. Zinc has once reached 3% higher followed by copper with 2% in between F, M months.
The graph shown represents that most of the price comparison is done in between -1 to 1 percentage, which is not a major difference between the prices of 3 different metals. The same pattern of price comparison is showed in 4 months(J, A, S, O), which almost similar price change.
Now, to conclude most of the price change was often similar but Nickel have both major difference and minor percentage drop in different months. But, Copper and Zinc were having almost similar percentage change

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response provides an overview of the data, but it fails to adequately report the main features. The description of the trends is vague and lacks precision. For example, referring to months as 'J', 'F', 'M' is confusing and does not clearly identify the data points. The comparison between metals is underdeveloped; while you mention that copper and zinc are similar, you do not provide specific data points or trends to support this effectively. To improve, you must select key data points (peaks and troughs) and describe them clearly rather than making general statements about the range of percentages. The summary lacks a clear focus on the significant fluctuations shown in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'The graph shown' or 'The same pattern'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when referring to months by single letters, which makes the logical flow difficult to follow. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data analysis.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'highest rise of metal' and 'almost the same number of percentages' are imprecise. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the word choice is often awkward or inaccurate, such as 'in between F, M months'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'peaked', or 'experienced a marginal decline'. Avoid using informal abbreviations for months and focus on using more sophisticated collocations to describe the trends observed in the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'The Highest rise of metal was nickel with 6% higher than compared with previous month' is grammatically incorrect and awkward. There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'Nickel have both major difference'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical consistency and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound.
