Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates the average monthly change in price of copper, nickel and Zinc spanning through the year 2014.

Overall, the percentage of change in the price of Nickel was the highest in the month of January, although the percentage gradually declined until June, it increased throughout the other months although it saw a dip in October. On the other hand, Zinc accounted for the least percentage change in price in January, increased and subsequently experienced a decline until the month of June.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the graph, including the trends for all three metals. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific data points from the graph. However, the report could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the metals rather than describing each one in isolation. For instance, noting that Nickel experienced the most volatile fluctuations compared to the relatively more stable Copper would have strengthened the analysis. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of the monthly changes throughout 2014.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different metals. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the repetition of 'the month of' which could be streamlined for better cohesion. Overall, the information is presented in a clear, logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'declined', 'steadily', and 'dip'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'relatively increase' (should be 'relative increase') and 'aliitle' (spelling error). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room for more precision in describing trends. For example, instead of saying 'accounting for the higher price change', you could use 'exhibiting the most significant price volatility'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the price of Zinc experiences' (tense inconsistency with the rest of the report) and 'a relatively increase' (incorrect word form). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with comma usage and spacing, such as 'months.However'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the range of structures is sufficient to meet the requirements of the task. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your score.
