Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given line chart compares price change of three metal with their previous month price during year 2014.

Overall, it is clearly seen that price of the Nickel experienced highest change in given year. In addition to that, there is much difference in percentage change in starting of year compared to end of the year.

By looking on the most impulsive priced metal, which is Nickel. In starting of year its price increased highest percentage with 6 percentage of change. However, after that price increase but rate of increase is falling and lowed to only one percentage in March and April. After neglecting amount of increase in may, price in june was 3 percentage decrease than may. In subsequent three months falling rate remained only one percentage. Although, in october fall by one percent, price started increasing by some in last two months of year.

Price change in Zinc was much similar to Nickel after March month. Copper price is not that impulsive which change only 1-2 percentage every year. It is surprising that during july to september change was stable in all three metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a general overview and attempts to describe the trends for the three metals. However, the analysis is inconsistent and lacks precision. For instance, the description of Nickel's fluctuations is confusing, and the claim that Copper only changes by '1-2 percentage every year' is inaccurate based on the graph provided. The report fails to clearly highlight the key features or make meaningful comparisons between the metals throughout the year. While all three metals are mentioned, the data interpretation is often vague or factually incorrect, which limits the effectiveness of the response. To improve, focus on identifying the peaks, troughs, and specific periods of stability rather than describing the data in a narrative, subjective manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the awkward transition 'By looking on the most impulsive priced metal' or the misuse of 'Although' at the start of a sentence. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the description of Nickel's movement is difficult to follow. While there is an attempt to group information, the logical flow between sentences is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and imprecise referencing, which hinders the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'price change', 'increase', and 'decrease'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'impulsive priced metal' and 'price started increasing by some'. The term 'impulsive' is used incorrectly in this context, as it describes human behavior rather than statistical trends. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'peaked', or 'marginal', and ensure that words are used in their correct collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are frequent issues with article usage (e.g., 'price of the Nickel', 'in starting of year'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary components, such as 'Copper price is not that impulsive which change only 1-2 percentage every year.' The use of complex structures is limited and often results in errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and the appropriate use of articles, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
