IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
First and foremost, I would like to point out that there is no regular trend in the percentage change of prices of these metals over the period of all these months. Like Nickel it dumped aggresively from a 6 percent of monthly change to 1 percent in mere 2 months.
Let me structure this repost by providing the change in percentage of metals one by one . So , at first i would like to demonstrate trend of Copper's price change . Copper's percentage price change remained the most steady over the period from January to December . The percenatge change of price of copper remained within 2 percent to -1 percent .
Than comes Zinc a little more volatile as compared to Copper . Zinc at start has 1 percent price change and than peaked to 3 percent of price change in February and than it was contained in a range of 3 to -1 percent of price change .
Here's the come the most volatile one Nickel . Nickel had 6 percent of price change at its peak in January but than it droped like a hell to -3 percent to its low in June and again it was kept contant over the period from June to september . It shows a little dump and than again pumped to 1 percent and again gone to state of being contant .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the graph but fails to adopt an appropriate academic tone. The inclusion of personal commentary, such as 'I would like to point out' and 'Let me structure this report', is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1. While the main features of the three metals are identified, the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear overview of the trends. The description of the data is inconsistent, and the lack of a formal summary paragraph hinders the overall achievement of the task. To improve, focus on objective reporting of data trends rather than narrating the writing process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of informal, conversational signposting like 'Than comes Zinc' and 'Here's the come' is not suitable for an academic report. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'and than'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow is disjointed. To achieve a higher score, use more sophisticated linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus that contributes to the overall summary of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and frequently inappropriate for an academic context. The use of informal, slang-like expressions such as 'dumped aggressively', 'droped like a hell', and 'pumped' is unsuitable for a formal report. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'percenatge', 'contant', and 'droped'. While the student manages to convey the basic meaning, the lack of precision and the reliance on informal register significantly limit the score. A wider range of academic vocabulary related to trends and data analysis is required to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'at start has 1 percent'). Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors is high enough to distract the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors in tense and word order.
