Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates the information about value fluctuation in percentage for copper, nickel and zinc across the year 2014.
Overall, there was constant value reported throughout the period between July till September. The highest point was reported in January for six percent. While lowest occurred in June for Nickel.
Initially, the value of Zinc initiated from one percentage inclined till three percent after irregular intervals it goes to two in the month of December. On the other hand, for all three metals remain parallel to each other within August month.

However, all mention types from starting it decreases for Nickel and copper. Whereas Zinc climbed first then after that decrease and then remain constant for few durations the increase across year. Lease value is reported by Nickel which is negative value minus three percent after that it increase to two percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the graph but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. While it identifies some data points, the description of trends is often confusing or factually incorrect based on the provided graph. For example, stating that the value of nickel was negative three percent in June is not clearly supported by the visual data in a way that makes sense to the reader. The report lacks a clear selection of key features; instead, it provides a disjointed list of observations. To improve, focus on identifying the overall trends (e.g., which metal ended higher or lower) and grouping data logically rather than describing each line in isolation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. Transitions are often misused or mechanical, such as 'Initially' and 'Following this,' which do not accurately reflect the chronological flow of the data. The referencing is also problematic; for instance, the phrase 'all mention types from starting it decreases' is unclear and makes it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, which disrupts the flow of information. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly refers back to the subject would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'value fluctuation in percentage' instead of 'percentage change in value' and 'Lease value' instead of 'lowest value.' The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends, relying on basic verbs like 'inclined,' 'climbed,' and 'decreased' without the necessary precision for an academic report. To reach a higher band, you should practice using more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'peaked,' and 'experienced a marginal decline.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'all three metals remain parallel'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'declined on the month of May'), and awkward sentence structures (e.g., 'after irregular intervals it goes to two in the month of December'). The range of structures is limited, and the errors are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring that tense usage is consistent when describing past data. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect prepositions will also help.
