Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting on the price changes of copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014, although the student mistakenly refers to the year as 2024. Key features such as the peak and trough of nickel are mentioned, and comparisons between the metals are attempted. However, the data reporting contains significant inaccuracies and confusion regarding the figures and months. For example, the text states that nickel reached -3% in February to June and that zinc reached 2% in December, which does not accurately reflect standard chart reading for this task type. The overall overview is limited and lacks clarity, resulting in an incomplete presentation of the main trends. Consequently, the performance aligns with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps establish a basic structure for the introduction and body sections. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing transitions and unclear referencing. Phrases like 'Meanwhile, Copper price was decline over the period' and abrupt time shifts (e.g., 'In June to October than it reached 2%') make it difficult to follow the development of ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the repetitive and incorrect use of 'whereas' and 'although'. Furthermore, referencing between sentences is often weak, leading to a disjointed reading experience. These features place the response firmly in Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'price', 'increase', and 'decline'. There are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the response, including 'oscillate trend on price', 'predominant at 6%', and 'price of copper was dwindle slightly'. Additionally, spelling and morphological errors occur, such as 'decline' used instead of 'declined' and 'december' uncapitalised. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, the noticeable errors and restricted range prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.0 appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and passive/active voice constructions, such as 'the line charts illustrates', 'was decline over the period', and 'price of copper was reached 1% at 1%'. Punctuation and article usage are also problematic throughout the text. While some basic sentences are formed correctly, the high frequency of grammatical errors and faulty complex structures causes noticeable difficulty for the reader, which corresponds to the Band 5.0 descriptors.
