Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the line graph illustrating the average monthly change in the prices of copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. However, the student's execution falls short of a fully developed overview. While the introduction correctly identifies the visual, the body paragraphs struggle to clearly convey the specific data points and trends, relying instead on vague references like 'the month of J' and imprecise figure descriptions. The overarching comparison is attempted, but key data points are either omitted or inaccurately rendered due to poor referencing of the graph's labels. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response shows some attempt at paragraphing, but the overall organization and logical progression are hindered by unclear referencing and fragmented sentences. The student frequently uses repetitive and vague transitional phrases such as 'starts to decrease' and 'starts to risen up' without maintaining a clear narrative flow. Furthermore, the extensive use of 'the month of J' creates severe ambiguity and disrupts the logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are either inadequate or awkwardly applied, making it difficult for the reader to follow the sequence of data over the year. Therefore, a band score of 4.0 is appropriate.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic terms like 'prices', 'change', 'increase', and 'decrease'. There are also numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'follwong' instead of 'following', 'linegraph', 'begining', and the non-standard morphological form 'risen up' used in place of 'rise' or 'rose'. These lexical inadequacies and frequent spelling errors strain the reader and reflect a basic vocabulary range, corresponding to a band score of 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The student attempts to construct complex sentences, but these attempts are frequently faulty and grammatically inaccurate. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors such as 'copper and nickel starts to decrease' and awkward verb tense combinations like 'rises up at the begining, start to decrease and risen up'. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on sentences that lack proper clause coordination. Frequent grammatical and mechanical errors distort meaning and make the text difficult to process, justifying a band score of 4.0.
